After Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech, Hokies starting defensive end Orion Martin went to Red Lobster with his parents, three family friends and his girlfriend, Jennifer Edwards.

Everyone ordered food, and Edwards went to the bathroom to wash her hands. When she returned, she saw a ring box sitting on the table, where Martin had placed it. Shocked, she put her hand over her mouth. Then Martin dropped to one knee and proposed. When Edwards said yes, everybody in the restaurant applauded.

Martin and Edwards met at church in their hometown, Martinsville, and have dated for just five months. But they recently discussed marriage. “That’s why I wasn’t nervous at all,“ said Martin, a 23-year-old senior. Edwards, 26, works at Georgia Tech.

Martin said the wedding probably would be next summer. He was inspired to propose early in his relationship by Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy. Martin read Dungy’s book “Quiet Strength” last fall and learned that “he got engaged to his wife after four months,“ Martin said.
