They are many up and coming playmakers on the defensive side of the ball for the Keydets.

Hidden Valley High School’s Alex Ray is working hard to grasp the new defensive scheme.  But he knows working hard is what will get him playing time in the Fall, and that means soaking in all of the coaching he can.

“It’s a thing I have to go over before the scrimmages and games.  Make sure everybody knows their jobs.  I had some good stuff and some bad stuff, but that’s why you learn from the film,” Ray told us.

New VMI head football coach Sparky Woods likes what Ray brings to the table.  “Alex is a utility guy.  He is a great punter, as well as a linebacker.  He is a smart guy, and I think he will be tired every Saturday, if he keeps going like he’s going.”

Martinsville grad Tracy Hairston is also looking for some good minutes on the field in 2008.  He says since he arrived on campus, things have gotten progressively better.  “When I first got here it was tough, but I’m straight now, it’s good.”

Coach woods believes Hairston’s athletic ability will be an asset to his team.  “He can get from point A to point B, has a lot of speed to him, so he will be a guy we have to have.”

With a very young team, these two former Friday night stars, hope to soon shine on Saturdays.
