The University of Richmond is No. 1. James Madison is No. 2.
Monday’s Football Championship Subdivision poll is topped by the Spiders (3-1). UR last was No. 1 in 1985, when the school held the ranking for five weeks.
Madison (3-1) caused a shift at the top of the poll with Saturday’s 35-32 win over Appalachian State, which was No. 1. JMU finished 2004, the year it won the national championship, as No. 1, and was No. 1 for the first week of 2005. UR and JMU each received serious consideration for this week’s top billing.
“Well into the [tabulation of votes], they were tied in terms of points,“ said David Coulson, the FCS executive director for the Sports Network, which sponsors the poll. UR finished with 2,389 points. JMU had 2,387.
Weekly voters include sports information directors at FCS schools, writers and broadcasters who cover the FCS, and representatives of the Sports Network. The Spiders were ranked No. 2 last week, then beat Maine 44-17. JMU was ranked No. 5 last week.
