17-year old Courtney Ellenbogen missed the cut at the Women’s US open last summer by a single stroke. There’s no reason to believe she’ll be intimidated when she tees it up in Williamsburg tomorrow. The 12th ranked junior golfer in the nation fired a 3-under 69 to qualify for the LPGA event. Wednesday she was at her home base, Blacksburg Country Club, preparing to trade shots with the world’s finest. You might have thought it was just another day on the range. Ellenbogen says she’ll prepare for the tournament just like any other, and yes--she does expect to have some nerves. But she says she has some nerves at all the tournaments she plays, so this one will not be any different. And despite what she’s facing, she still will put pressure on herself--just like she does whenever she tees it up.
Next weekend Ellenbogen and four more of the top junior golfers in the nation will tee it up at Roanoke Country Club--in the 25th annual Scott Robertson Memorial. The Robertson has become a “must stop” for the junior golf circuit--with fields chaulk full of state champions from as states far and wide. Play this year runs from May 16th through the 18th.
