The River Ridge has produced a trio of elite teams this year, and the final week of collisions were all that remain to sort out the regular season title. Salem had defeated Hidden Valley a pair of times, but also dropped a pair to Cave Spring. The Titans and Knights were also tied at the top with a pair of District losses each. Thursday the Knights and Titans played another extra inning affair, and for the second time this year it was the Titans that eeked out a one run victory. Meredith Moore had a solo homer for Cave Spring to give the Knights a 2-1 lead, but Hidden Valley tied the game and sent it into extra innings. The game was finally decided in the 10th inning, when Sarah Cutright scored a ball that reached the backstop for a 3-2 10 inning final. Salem and Hidden Valley are now set to play Friday at Cave Spring to decide the title.
Cave Spring may have been eliminated from regular season title consideration, but they are not being counted out come tournament time. The Knights have been a regular entrant in the state tournament over the past four seasons, and this year they hope to carry on the tradition. Coach Lindsey Moore spent five years as an assistant coach under Beth Mast, and this is her first year as the head coach of the Knights. She says this team has strong team chemistry, and leadership from a core of seniors that makes anything possible. It’s that bond that has the Cave Spring softball team thinking of another trip to Radford for the Spring Jubilee.
The best this senior class has accomplished is a trip to the state semifinals, and clearly a trip to the big game is what they are missing. Despite that void, the senior class is focused on leaving with some great memories and great friends.
