BASSETT - The Tunstall Trojans will have to settle for a chance at third place in the Piedmont District, and a shot at the Region IV tournament after falling to the Bassett Bengals 98-67 on Thursday night.

Dustin Cockram led Tunstall (3-17) with 20 points and five rebounds, while Trojans Jed Dixon and Cory Yourse contributed as well, with nine points each. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bengals and a 30-point night by Bassett’s Josh McGill.

The Trojans will now take on Martinsville on Saturday, at Bassett, for third place in the district tournament, and need a win to advance to the Region IV tournament after getting blown out on Thursday.

Not that it started as a blowout. In fact, the Trojans hung around with Bassett early on. The Bengals took a 22-11 lead into the second quarter, but Tunstall had little intention of going quietly.

Breaking the Bengals’ press defense, the Trojans kept the score at 47-37 heading into halftime thanks to 10 points in the second quarter by Cockram, a pair of critical 3-pointers by Dixon, and some solid defense of their own.

Yet, the Trojans couldn’t hang on forever, and some hot outside shooting by the Bengals, led again by McGill, in the third quarter helped Bassett to pull away and put the game out of Tunstall’s reach.
