George Wythe Boys, Floyd Co. Girls in State Finals

Floyd Co is back in the Girls A state final for the second consecutive season, and coach Al Coperhaver has the high powered George Wythe boys playing for his first state title in 21 years at the school. Meanwhile Chilhowie falls to Lancaster in Group A D-2 girls action.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Tennis Simon scored 19 points to lead
George Wythe of Wytheville past Buckingham 71-63 in the VHSL Group
A District 2 semifinals of the state basketball tourney Friday.
The Maroons (27-2) will face Gate City in Saturday’s
championship game, putting their 26-game win streak on the line.
Gate City beat King William 61-47 earlier.
Buckingham (22-5) had a 19-game win streak snapped.
Tristan Boysaw scored 10 points in the second quarter, helping
the Maroons to a 44-34 lead at halftime. Buckingham could get no
closer than three the rest of the way.
Boysaw added 14 points for George Wythe, Will Sawyers 13, and
Brandon Davis 11.
Jesse White led Buckingham with 22 points. David Jones added 11
and JacQuan Eldridge 10. The Knights’ comeback bid was hampered by
its 12-for-28 free-throw shooting.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Brittany Avancini scored 31 points as Floyd
County edged George Mason 66-62 on Friday in the VHSL Group A
District 2 tournament semifinals.
The Buffaloes (25-3) advanced to the finals Saturday against
Lancaster. The Mustangs finished 19-10.
Avancini scored 9 points in the first 3:34 of the game, helping
Floyd take a 13-7 lead.
Carmen Bolt scored the last 5 points of the first half for the
Buffaloes, giving them a 27-24 halftime lead.
The Mustangs could get no closer than 3 in the 3rd quarter, but
took a couple of leads late in the game before Floyd hit
back-to-back 3-pointers by Molly Brown and Brittany Bourne.
In addition to her 31 points, Avancini had 7 assists, 7 rebounds
and 5 steals.
George Mason was led by Nicole Mitchell’s 18 points. Chantal
Thomas added 16.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Andrea White scored 29 points to lead
Lancaster over Chilhowie on Friday in a semifinal game of the
VHSL’s Group 2-A girls tournament.
Lancaster (25-4) won its 12th straight game by piling up a 29-10
lead at the half and stretching it to 20 points to start the second
half. Chilhowie (22-5), which trailed throughout, never got closer
than 8.
White was 13-of-20 from the field, had 9 rebounds and 7 steals.
Emily Doane led Chilhowie with 23.
