Curtisha Stephens scored on a diving layup as time expired in the first quarter, stretching George Washington’s lead to 15 as she crashed to the floor.

The game, at that point, was all but over.

“I thought probably five minutes into the game, just their whole attitude, we were done,” Patrick Henry coach Toree Morris said. “They set the tone, and that’s how the whole game went.”

Top-seeded GW scored the first 10 points and cruised to a 68-51 victory against Patrick Henry in Western Valley District tournament semifinal action on Tuesday night in Danville. The Eagles will host Franklin County, a 46-39 winner against William Fleming in the other semifinal, for the district tournament championship on Thursday.

Thanks to winning the regular-season district title, GW (19-5, 10-1) opens Northwest Region play against an opponent to be determined at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at home, regardless of the result of its upcoming game against Franklin County.

“We seem to be on top of our game right now,” GW coach Wayne Shelton said. “Hopefully we’re peaking at the right time.”

Patrick Henry (16-6, 7-5) scored five points in the first quarter, trailed 37-14 at intermission and didn’t hit consecutive field goals until early in the second half. GW led by as much as 28 points before allowing the Patriots to close the game on a 12-2 run.

“They put up a lot of points in the second half,” Shelton said. “To have 14 at halftime and end up with 50-some, they are a talented team.”

Sarah Williams connected on four 3-pointers in the second half and paced Patrick Henry with 22 points.

Erica Warren scored a game-high 24 points for GW, Jasmine Hairston added 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Tia Chattin and Narcissa Grayson each chipped in 10 points. Chattin snagged eight rebounds and Grayson recorded eight assists.

“It’s really big, especially for my senior year,” Warren said about advancing to the district tournament championship game. “Hopefully we’ll continue and win it all.”
