Kylee Beecher, Abby Oliver and Abby Redick
combined for 53 points Saturday to lead Hidden Valley to a 59-45
victory against Waynesboro and its second consecutive VHSL Group AA
girls state championship.
The Titans (26-4) won their last 16 games and became the first
repeat champion among Group AA girls since Lord Botetourt in
1995-95. Waynesboro also finished 26-4.
“Those three girls have been special,” Hidden Valley head
coach Mike McGuire said of his high-scoring trio. “They’re great
kids and lead by example.”
The Titans took control quickly, jumping out to a 21-8 lead with
5:20 left in the half. At that point, Waynesboro was 3-for-14 from
the floor and had nine turnovers.
Hidden Valley built its lead to 16 before a 13-3 spurt by the
Little Giants spanning halftime cut the margin to 31-25 with 6:02
left in the third quarter.
But four points by Redick and three by Oliver fueled an 8-2 run
that made it 39-27 late in the third and Waynesboro never got the
deficit into single digits again.
Beecher led Hidden Valley with 21 points, 16 rebounds, three
assists and two steals. She was 9-for-12 from the field. Oliver and
Redick each scored 16.
Devon Brown led Waynesboro with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Kiawna Berry scored 12.
