Hidden Valley High School makes a steal off the court for their new head boys basketball coach.
According to a news release from Roanoke County Public Schools, Troy Wells is leaving Martinsville High School for the Titans’ job. Wells brings three state championship titles from his years with the Bulldogs to Hidden Valley. The most recent of those titles came in 2006.
Wells has been the head coach at Martinsville since 1995, and was assistant coach at Martinsville for 17 years before that. Under Wells’ leadership, the Bulldogs won three state championships, nine Piedmont District championships, and seven regional championships. Wells has a coaching record of 223-85.
Wells is also a two-time Associated Press Coach of the Year, two-time VHSL State Coach of the Year, two-time Roanoke Times Timesland Coach of the Year and is a nine-time district coach of the year.
“We are extremely fortunate to have such a successful coach joining the Titans,” said Hidden Valley High School Principal Rhonda Stegall in the news release. “Under coach Wells’ direction, I am confident the Titans will continue to have great success on the court,” Stegall added.
Wells will succeed current head coach Chris Morris, who is taking over as Hidden Valley’s athletic director. Current A.D. Dennis Layman plans to retire at the end of June.
