Grand slam lifts Tunstall past Hargrave
Hargrave coach Scott Roach didn’t like the situation one bit, but the way he saw it, he had no other choice. Clinging to a tie against the Tunstall Trojans in extra innings on Wednesday night, Roach had just called for an intentional walk of Dustin Cockram to load the bases. No outs were in the books, and Tunstall’s heavy-hitting Brett Hylton was coming to the plate.

Hubbard helps re-launch Amherst’s track program
Amherst’s junior LaCear Hubbard has been at the forefront of a resurgent girls track program under second-year coach Lance Carter. Amherst finished fourth at the Group AA state indoor meet in March.

Chatham’s Word commits to play basketball for Division I Coppin State
A day after teammate Kelly Montgomery committed to Gardner-Webb University to play softball, the second of the Cavaliers’ five senior basketball players put pen to paper on Wednesday. Word signed a full scholarship to play basketball for Coppin State University in Baltimore.

Chatham’s Montgomery signs letter of intent to play softball for Gardner-Webb
A left fielder for the Chatham Cavaliers, Montgomery batted .379 with 16 RBIs and a .621 slugging percentage in 2007. But that wasn’t what got to the coaches. It was Montgomery’s lack of defensive assists that drew the chuckles. She didn’t have a single one — not that the abnormality was any fault of her own. “It was because people stopped running on her,” Chatham coach Joe Lee said. “If it’s a routine ball to left, they’re not going to try.”

Tunstall was swept by Cave Spring on Monday, falling 1-0 and 3-0 in a pair of five-inning games.
Tunstall wins 3rd consecutive Pittsylvania County track and field championship
Tunstall’s LaMarcus Adkins took first place in three events, and his Tunstall Trojans took home their third consecutive Pittsylvania County track and field championship.
High School Baseball: GW Danville defeats Patrick County & Hargrave in double header
In the first game, GW slipped past Patrick County in extra innings. In the second game, GW edged Hargrave 5-4 by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth.

Halifax County High School mourns the death of baseball pitcher
Tyler Wayne Hunt, was pulling out of his drive way when his 1990 Chevrolet Silverado pick up was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling logs. He was a pitcher on the Halifax County High School varsity baseball team.

Amherst Lancers football coach to take W&L job
Lancer head football coach Scott Abell said today that he has been offered, and plans to accept, a coaching position at Washington & Lee University. Abell, who led the Lancers to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007, said W&L has offered him a position as an offensive coordinator.

Local Athletes Take Part In Football Combine
The Edge Sports Performance Center in Roanoke held it’s first high school football combine last sunday. Around 100 athletes showed off their skills and got a glimpse of where they stack up with their peers. The Edge plans on doing more combines for other sports in the future.
George Wythe Boys, Floyd Co. Girls in State Finals
Floyd Co is back in the Girls A state final for the second consecutive season, and coach Al Coperhaver has the high powered George Wythe boys playing for his first state title in 21 years at the school. Meanwhile Chilhowie falls to Lancaster in Group A D-2 girls action.
