Visiting Jefferson Forest used three extra base hits to power its way past Heritage in a key Seminole Distinct baseball clash on Wednesday. 

Hargrave coach Scott Roach didn’t like the situation one bit, but the way he saw it, he had no other choice.  Clinging to a tie against the Tunstall Trojans in extra innings on Wednesday night, Roach had just called for an intentional walk of Dustin Cockram to load the bases. No outs were in the books, and Tunstall’s heavy-hitting Brett Hylton was coming to the plate.

A day after teammate Kelly Montgomery committed to Gardner-Webb University to play softball, the second of the Cavaliers’ five senior basketball players put pen to paper on Wednesday. Word signed a full scholarship to play basketball for Coppin State University in Baltimore. 

A left fielder for the Chatham Cavaliers, Montgomery batted .379 with 16 RBIs and a .621 slugging percentage in 2007. But that wasn’t what got to the coaches. It was Montgomery’s lack of defensive assists that drew the chuckles. She didn’t have a single one — not that the abnormality was any fault of her own.  “It was because people stopped running on her,” Chatham coach Joe Lee said. “If it’s a routine ball to left, they’re not going to try.”

Tunstall was swept by Cave Spring on Monday, falling 1-0 and 3-0 in a pair of five-inning games. 

Tunstall’s LaMarcus Adkins took first place in three events, and his Tunstall Trojans took home their third consecutive Pittsylvania County track and field championship. 

In the first game, GW slipped past Patrick County in extra innings.  In the second game, GW edged Hargrave 5-4 by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth.

Tyler Wayne Hunt, was pulling out of his drive way when his 1990 Chevrolet Silverado pick up was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling logs.  He was a pitcher on the Halifax County High School varsity baseball team.

Long time football coach and now teacher Joel hicks is honored in Pulaski for his long time comitment to the school.

Lancer head football coach Scott Abell said today that he has been offered, and plans to accept, a coaching position at Washington & Lee University.  Abell, who led the Lancers to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007, said W&L has offered him a position as an offensive coordinator.

Nelson County fended off a feisty Surry team, winning 50-47 to claim the school’s first boys basketball title. 

Big three sparks Hidden Valley girls to repeat title

The Edge Sports Performance Center in Roanoke held it’s first high school football combine last sunday.  Around 100 athletes showed off their skills and got a glimpse of where they stack up with their peers.  The Edge plans on doing more combines for other sports in the future.

Floyd Co is back in the Girls A state final for the second consecutive season, and coach Al Coperhaver has the high powered George Wythe boys playing for his first state title in 21 years at the school. Meanwhile Chilhowie falls to Lancaster in Group A D-2 girls action.

The Hidden Valley Girls will have a chance to defend their state crown Saturday night, while the the Titan and Bruin Boys teams come up one game short of the state finals.

Both the Galax Boys and Bland Girls made school history by advancing to the state semifinals, but both of their respective runs end there.

There are only four teams left in each group of Virginia H.S. Basketball.  Those schools will take their game to Richmond for the Semifinal Round.  Find out when your favorite local team will be in action. 

The Hidden Valley girls beat Brookville 42-30 to move on to Richmond.  The Floyd County girls and Blacksburg boys also punch their tickets to the State Final Four. 

GW Danville’s perfect season comes to a close at the hands of Petersburg, and Hidden Valley survives a visit from Robert E Lee-Staunton. 

After holding off a comeback effort from James River in the Region Championship, the Maroons are ready for the State Quarterfinals.  Chris Whitley takes the team in the Prep Zone. 

George Washington’s David Wilson’s jump of 48-9¼ earned the junior the Group AAA state title in the boys triple jump at the state indoor track meet Saturday at Oakton High School.

The George Washington boys and girls basketball teams know they will face a Central Region team later this week, but the matchups are still undecided
