Stock car racing media pioneer Hal Hamrick dies at 79

Hal Hamrick, part of the team that broadcast the first Daytona 500 in 1959, died Sunday in Gastonia, N.C. He had suffered a stroke on Friday. He was 79.
Until 1983, Mr. Hamrick worked with the Universal Radio Network, the groundbreaking company for NASCAR radio broadcasts. One of the earliest broadcasts was from Martinsville Speedway in 1952.
He was publisher of “FasTrack,“ a weekly publication that focused on grassroots auto racing.
A funeral for Mr. Hamrick will be held at the Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
