Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted the fastest lap during today’s practice session for NASCAR Sprint Cup teams as they prepared for tomorrow’s 7:30 p.m. 400-lap race at Richmond International Raceway.
Earnhardt’s Chevrolet circled the ¾-mile D-shaped track at 123.412 mph (21.878 seconds). Mark Martin’s Chevy was second fastest at 122.895 mph (21.970 seconds). Kasey Kahne’s Dodge, Denny Hamlin’s Toyota and Elliott Sadler’s Dodge completed the top five in the practice session.
In all, 47 drivers took practice laps. Time trials for the 43-car race will take place this evening. The lap times were tightly packed. The 46th-fastest driver—Jon Wood in a Ford—was not quite 7/10s of a second slower than Earnhardt.
Only John Andretti, who had trouble with his Chevrolet and never posted a full-speed lap, was more than a second slower than the session leader.
