The resignation of Joe Gibbs as head coach of the Washington Redskins sent ripples through the NFL, for sure. But it also turned some heads in the NASCAR Cup Series, as it became apparent the Hall of Fame Coach would be back to a more hands-on approach with his race team.
The switch to Toyota is beginning to look like a great move. Early testing has been competitive with the best Chevy’s, and there is no questioning Gibb’s stable of Drivers. Two-time Champ Tony Stewart is capable of driving anything with wheels and an engine to a title. Denny Hamlin has proven a worthy contender in back to back Chases, and newcomer Kyle Busch may have actually been signed on to a team where he won’t be the most notorious guy in the garage. (Tony gets that, hands down!) Busch will drive the 18 M & M’s car for Gibbs, and will look to qualify for his third straight Chase. If these three guys can work together and co-exist, Gibbs may be the first challenger to try and knock Hendrick off the perch as NASCAR’s dominate team.
