The NASCAR hall of fame that Richmond unsuccessfully pursued is getting more expensive—again.
The Charlotte Observer today reports that the hall’s planners went before Charlotte City Council last night to seek an extra $32 million. The funds would be used to build better exhibits, increase the building’s energy efficiency and pay for unexpected construction costs.
Approval, if granted, would bring the total cost of the project to $195 million.
This would be the second cost increase for the hall, which was originally budgeted at $160.5 million.
Charlotte won the rights to build the hall by winning a competition against Atlanta, Daytona Beach, Fla., Kansas City and Richmond.
The hall will be paid for with a mix of hospitality taxes, loans and money from land sales.
