Coventry Commonwealth Games Open In Roanoke

The Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia officially opened Friday night with the opening ceremonies at the Roanoke Civic Center. The annual parade of athletes, more than 9000 strong this year, were welcomed by guest speaker Ethan Zohn, Miss Virginia 2008 and a host of other dignitaries. Zohn is the co-founder of Grassroots Soccer and was also the winner of Survivor, Africa. The colorful and festive ceremony included pyrotechnics, a BMX stunt show, the lighting of the cauldron and much more.
This year marks the 19th Anniversary of the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia. Over 9,000 athletes are expected to compete in one of the 58 sports/events that are being offered this year. Since the Games inception in 1990, more than 152,000 athletes have competed in the Games.
