EUGENE, Ore. - Richmond’s Queen Harrison, who made the U.S. Olympic team earlier this week in the 400-meter hurdles, has pulled out of the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials. She was set to compete at the shorter distance Saturday.
The Hermitage High grad, a rising junior at Virginia Tech, injured her left hamstring last month at the NCAA championships. She told the Times-Dispatch Thursday that heading into the trials, she and Virginia Tech hurdles coach Lawrence Johnson had discussed limiting her Olympic participation if she was successful in the 400. Harrison finished second in that event.
“We’d always said, ‘If the 400 meters goes the way we want it go, we’ll just scratch out of the 100,’” she said. “So now we can focus on getting healthy. Trying to do two different events is tough in an event like the Olympic Games. You’ve got to prioritize.”
