It started as a friendly rivalry as John Carlin’s NBA team of choice, the Celtics, took on Jeff Haniewich’s hometown Cavaliers. It quickly grew into a challenge, and then…a showdown. The two WSLS personalities squared off on the hardwoods at the YMCA, in a best of three series. A good crowd was on hand and the YMCA provided a ref to keep the action clean. Each game was the first to ten points, with each bucket counting for one, and three-pointers counting for two points. The first game was competitive early as Haniewich used his size advantage to dominate the boards and he knocked down an occasional three. But Carlin displayed his quickness and consistency, with a number of layups and mid-range jumpers to take game one 10 to 5. In game two Haniewich buried two long three-pointers to jump out to a four-nothing lead, but Carlin’s quickness and consistency continued to pay dividends as he tied the game at five..then again at seven. And it was his superior conditioning which allowed him to pull away, as news defeats weather in the battle of the WSLS anchors. Game two’s final score was 10-7.
