Salem (WSLS-10 SPORTS)- Coach Stephen Magenbauer and his back-to-back VHSL 4A state champion Salem Spartans were honored Tuesday night during halftime of their basketball game. The Spartans were one of 50 schools honored on the MAXPREPS tour of champions presented by the Army National Guard.
The team was ranked 151 nationally for the 2016 season after going 14-1 to capture their second VHSL Group 4A title in a row, 31-27 over Dinwiddie. The Spartans are a combined 41-2 over three seasons and have won eleven games in each of the past five seasons.
"We are really proud of what this team accomplished, to win back to back championships in the fashion that we did, is truly a compliment to our players, and the support we have, and our fans, and to be recognized by MAXPREPS for the second year in a row is something we weren't expecting..and its just a great honor," explains Magenbauer.
This year's state championship was the program's eighth.
