Roanoke College defeats No. 1 seed Oswego State, advances

Maroons next game is Saturday at 2:15 p.m.

APPLETON, Wis. – Roanoke College began its quest to be crowned DIII NCAA baseball champions with a win against top-seeded Oswego State, 8 to 7, on Friday afternoon.

The Maroons, the eight seed, started in an early hole against the Lakers, trailing 2-0 after the first inning.

But a two-RBI double by catcher Will Black and another RBI by right fielder Sean Guida gave Roanoke the lead.

Black finished the day at the plate 4-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs.

Oswego State would score four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

But after that, Roanoke College continued scoring and didn't let up: one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

The Maroons ran into trouble in the top of the ninth, as Oswego State loaded the bases with one.

A sacrifice fly cut Roanoke College's lead in half, but the Maroons held on for the win.

The Maroons will now play Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. while the Lakers will shift into the losers bracket against Concordia University Chicago on Saturday at 11 a.m.
