Roanoke Co. teachers awarded thousands in grants

Roanoke Co. -

The Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation is making a difference in the classroom awarding thousands of dollars in grants.

72 grants were awarded to Roanoke County teachers to pay for special class projects.

This year about $19,000 was given out.

5th grade teacher, Brenda Agee, is using her awarded money to pay for new books.

"There would be no way to get new books at this point without having something like this available," Agee explained.

"These are things that often have expenses related to them. They have to buy equipment, they have to buy kits, or books or what have you that otherwise the county and no schools are prepared to pay for today, so this is a way for the community to be able to give back through the foundation," said foundation president, Michael Mulvaney.

The grants are paid for through a phone-a-thon and an annual golf tournament.
