Drug dogs search Giles, Narrows high schools

Area canines and their handlers spent the day sniffing out drugs in Giles County schools.

Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons says the searches are done a few times every year.

Today, the dogs checked classrooms, bathrooms and lockers.

They got hits on lockers at both Giles and Narrows High schools, but police *did not* find any drugs.

Sheriff Millirons says some of those same lockers have been getting hits for the past few years, which means the odor has stayed in there.

But, just in case, he says the school resource officer keeps an eye on the students who use those lockers.

"We take the names of the students and the school resource officer will do an investigation." Find out who they are, who they hang out with. Some of them turn up to be a positive match, but others turn out not to be anything, said Millirons.

Although nothing was uncovered today, Sheriff Millirons says the searches keep students on their toes and teach them a valuable lesson: don't use drugs or bring them on school property.

Since nothing was found today, he says it appears students are getting the message, and that today, parents can be proud of their children.

Sheriff Millirons tells WSLS the last time Giles deputies found drugs on school property was last spring in a student's car.

Today, several officers and canines from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, Christiansburg Police Department, Radford Police Department, Narrows Police Department, Pearisburg Police Department and Pembroke Police Department helped out with the drug searches.

You can watch the search, and hear from officers tonight on WSLS at 5:00 p.m.

A search by drug dogs at the two Giles County High Schools found no drugs, but may have given investigators some leads.

I was with officers as they started the searches at Giles High School and Narrows High School Friday morning.

Deputies and K-9s searched lockers, classrooms, halls, and bathrooms at both schools. Investigators tell me that they did not find any illegal drugs, but the K-9s did get several "hits" on lockers.

Officers say those "hits" are significant because it likely means some type of illegal drug was there in the past, and the scent was still there. Investigators say they typically ask School Resource Officers to keep an eye on students who use those lockers.

The Giles County Sheriff's Office only has one K-9, so they called the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, Christiansburg Police, and Radford Police for help.

Deputies say each search is a surprise for the school, and even the principals did not know about the searches ahead of time. Giles High School went to the extreme of holding a fire drill to get students out so officers and the dogs could search.
