TUESDAY:

Eight more people have been arrested in connection with an eight-month drug operation, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Two turned themselves in after seeing media coverage of the arrests, said Lt. G.L. Turner. Six are still being sought by deputies.

Operation Silent Night has led to 71 people being charged with 174 felonies related to drug distribution, according to authorities. Two of the cases are under review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for possible federal charges, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspects were indicted by a grand jury Thursday and deputies began arresting suspects at 5 a.m. Friday. Those arrests continued over the weekend.

Since April, undercover agents say they purchased marijuana, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy, and a variety of prescription drugs in controlled buys from the suspects.

The operation was the result of complaints from Amherst County residents regarding drug activities. Sheriff Jimmy Ayers said some 50 percent of crime in the county is attributable to the drug trade.

The operation was dubbed “Silent Night” because most of the drug buys by undercover officers happened at night using controlled buys, in which they purchased suspected drugs while other officers observed and recorded the offenses.

Drugs were sold from vehicles or in parking lots. Children were present during some of the transactions and when drugs were being used. Amherst County Social Services also became involved, Ayers said.

Most of the men and women arrested live in Amherst County, with several more from Lynchburg, Nelson County, Bedford County or Campbell County, a news release said.

EARLIER:

Amherst County authorities began a barrage of arrests Friday following a major drug investigation in which dozens were indicted.

"Operation Silent Night," which started April 1, has led to 71 people being charged with 174 felonies related to drug distribution, the Amherst County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Investigator J.E. Begley said "numerous undercover purchases of marijuana, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy, and a variety of prescription drugs were made during the investigation."

Authorities began arresting suspects about 5 a.m. Friday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office is reviewing two cases for possible federal charges, authorities said.

Of those charged, 55 live in Amherst County, seven in Lynchburg, four in Nelson County, two in Campbell County and one in Bedford County, authorities say.

The drug roundup in Amherst County was the result of residents’ complaints, and because more than 50 percent of crime in the county is drug related, according to Sheriff Jimmy Ayers and Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Maddox.

“The No. 1 complaint we get from people is, do something about the drug dealing,” Maddox said. Spin-off crimes from drug addiction include larceny, identity theft, credit card fraud and breaking and entering, she said. “Citizens are aware it’s going on.”

“We’re seeing more methamphetamine coming into Amherst County,” and statewide, Maddox said.

Heroin and methamphetamine purchased during this investigation had been imported, Ayers said.

Drug use in Amherst County has reached a seeming epidemic proportion, Ayers said. “As a parent, it scares me to death,” Ayers said.

“When you see the devastation on a daily basis that drugs create, it’s hard to be proud” of the operation, Ayers said, but also said that he was proud of his deputies.

“We reached a point that we almost had to stop,” Ayers said. “Did we get to the bottom of it? No ... By no means will it stop it, but for a while it will slow it down in our community,” he said.

The operation was called “Silent Night” because 95 percent of the transactions and interactions with suspects occurred in the dead of night, Ayers said. Investigators used so-called controlled buys, in which they purchased suspected drugs with observers and equipment to document the offenses.

The suspects sold drugs from vehicles or in parking lots, so that authorities could not obtain search warrants for their homes, Maddox said. Children were present at some of the transactions and when drugs were being used, including intravenous drug use, Ayers said. Amherst County Social Services has become involved, he said.

Beginning in April, deputies methodically followed leads from one suspect to another, Ayers said.

“It’s almost like the root of a tree, intertwined,” Ayers said. “So many of these individuals are intertwined with each other.”

An Amherst County grand jury heard the cases Wednesday and returned indictments Thursday, Ayers said.

Deputies started Friday with 69 suspects, but deputies encountered two more people with drugs while they were arresting already-identified suspects.

Seven or eight of the arrestees had no previous criminal record, but others have been in trouble for selling drugs previously, the officials said.

“Some of them have been incarcerated quite a bit of their lives,” Ayers said.
