Tunstall junior Luke Simpson struck out 12 and allowed only two hits in the Trojans’ 10-0 victory over Magna Vista in the Piedmont District tournament semifinals Wednesday at Hooker Field.
Tunstall (18-3) will face Bassett at 7:30 p.m. today at Hooker Field in the district championship game. The Bengals defeated Patrick County, 3-1, in the second semifinal contest.
Chris Buckner hit a three-run home run to power the Trojans’ offense and he finished with four RBIs. Gavin Payne and Chase Scarce each had RBI singles, Daymon Totherow finished with two singles, Brad Hylton had a double and a single, and Holt Cassada finished with a double.
Dan River 6, Altavista 1
Dan River junior Courtney Smithers scattered five hits and drove in two runs in the Wildcats’ 6-1 Dogwood District tournament semifinal victory over Altavista in Ringgold.
Dan River (17-5), the district tournament’s top seed, will host second-seeded Appomattox (14-7) at 6 p.m. Friday in the district championship game.
Jessica Dalton drove in two runs, Brooke Cassada had a single and an RBI, and Rhyan Scearce finished with a double, single and RBI. Holly Eckard, Ricki Smithers and Kimmie Meadows each had two singles, and Rebekah Burner finished with a single.
North Johnston 4, Bartlett Yancey 3
North Johnston scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end Bartlett Yancey’s magical run in the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs, 4-3, late Tuesday night in Kenly, N.C.
BY (26-2), the first team to score against North Johnston (26-1) in the playoffs, tied the game at 3-3 with two outs in the top of the seventh on Taylor Dix’s RBI single.
Jessica Long went 2-for-4 and Mary Beth Smith and Laura Young each finished with an RBI. Smith (16-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks. She also struck out five.

Bassett scored two goals in the opening five minutes and rolled to a 5-0 victory over Tunstall in the semifinals of the Piedmont District tournament at Martinsville High School.
Tunstall (6-9-1) will face Magna Vista on Friday in the consolation match.
