Roanoke Valley broadband task force recommends establishing a commission

Roanoke valley business leaders say we're in a doughnut hole that we don't want to be in.

The regional broadband task force finished up its work.

It found the tobacco commission has been doing a nice job paying for broadband in rural counties surrounding the Roanoke valley.

It also found the Roanoke valley's not big enough for a broadband provider to pay for the cost to bring it to us.

The task force is recommending setting up a regional commission to promote broadband service in the Roanoke area.

Community leaders say broadband is important because, without enough of it, businesses looking to expand might count that as a strike against the Roanoke valley.
