Roanoke commonwealth's attorney chooses not to pursue charges in pitbull case

Roanoke city commonwealth's attorney Don Caldwell said he will not pursue charges in a case involving a pitbull that had to have its leg amputated after a stay at the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection last spring.

The pitbull, Trinity, had the operation at Angels of Assisi last June, after a more than one week stay at the Regional Center.

In a five page summary, that included a timeline, Caldwell concluded Trinity's treatment wasn't the fault of any one person, that no one "took decisive action to correct the situation thus allowing it to continue to the point that it did."

Caldwell also said a police investigation into Trinity's case revealed an employee at the Regional Center didn't reveal the deteriorating condition of the dog's foot due to the fact he was scared Trinity would be put down.

"Hopefully this event will serve to stimulate further discussion on how to best address a balance of overwhelming need and limited resources in the area of animal welfare," Caldwell concluded.
