Montgomery Co. sheriff's office, NRV drug task force hit $1.28 million cash seizure

After a traffic stop last September on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County, the New River Valley Drug Task Force and the Montgomery County sheriff's office hit on a 1.28 million dollar cash seizure.

It happened in the southbound lane near mile marker 102.

Police found $200,000 hidden the driver's cab.

Court records show he was driving an 18-wheeler.

Investigators also found so much cash hidden in a mini-fridge in the truck that, at the scene, they couldn't count all of it.

A professional counter then added it all up to $1,288,820 in cash.

Federal prosecutors moved to take possession of the money earlier this week in court.

They are required to prove it all came from drug proceeds.

Court records show they are confident they can do that after a drug dog alerted on several different places in the truck.

The money would be dispersed to police departments and sheriff's offices surrounding that mile marker 102 area.

The departments would be required to spend the money on law enforcement.

Ironically, all this happened during a training exercise, the last day of a four day class for police officers in the New River Valley where they were receiving lessons on how to spot drug activity on the interstates.
