Montgomery County hopes busting meth cook will reduce crime

It was the biggest one pot meth lab busts in Montgomery County so far, investigators said.

The Montgomery County sheriff's office raided what vice detectives said was William Burton's meth lab Wednesday in Riner.

Deputies arrested Burton and a woman, Felicia Lovern.

Investigators called Burton one of the most sophisticated cooks in the New River Valley.

Vice detectives will tell you, they can tell when they've got a good cook operating in their area because they'll see the crime rate increase.

"'Breaking and entering offenses] will go up.  Larcenies will go up.  Other types of crime will go up because people are traveling into that area that wasn't originally traveled," explained a Montgomery County vice detective whom declined to be identified.

He works undercover.

Montgomery County started seeing one pot cooks popping up in the meth trade in 2010 when they found 7 labs, investigators said.

That number jumped up to 27 in 2011 and held steady at 25 last year.

Vice detectives have found five labs so far this year.
