Grandin Theater seeks community help

The lights shine brightly at the Grandin Theater as the usual Friday night crowd piles in to see some box office hits. It is these types of local theaters Anthony Kent enjoys.

"There is an added special bonus you get with coming to a theater like the Grandin. It is an excellent opportunity and needs to be preserved," says Kent.

For decades the hottest movies have played here, but without help that could change soon.

The Grandin uses 35 millimeter film to show movies but several movie distributors will no longer make them and will go strictly to digital. So that is where you help comes in. They need 40 thousand dollars to make the necessary changes to keep showing the movies you want to see here.

Executive director Cathy Chittum started a campaign to get the community involved.

"It is part of us being sustainable and being a viable entity in this community, we have to do this," says Chittum.

The Grandin has already received the Taubmann Sustainability grant for $50,000, and another $95,000 from the Roanoke Women's Foundation.  However Chittum says this landmark needs your help, and she's certain the community will come through.

"This is a community supported theater and we are very indebted to the community for helping," says Chittum.

Money is already coming in. Kent came by to make a donation.

"I think it is important to maintain some past history in the present and helps everybody where the community has come from and enjoy that," says Kent.

One of the many working together to make sure the Grandin keeps showing the best movies, with local charm.
