Love you to death? St. Alban's Sanatorium creates Valentine's Day haunted house

When you think romance, a haunted house probably isn't the first thing that pops into your mind.  But St. Alban's Sanatorium in Radford hopes you'll be willing to think outside the box this Valentine's Day weekend.

The team at St. Alban's is well aware it's not Halloween -- but they say it doesn't have to be October to introduce a little horror into your life.

"This is an experience like no other," said Jessica Wright, Administrator of St. Alban's Sanatorium.  "There's nothing like grabbing a hold of someone you love and being scared together.  It's kind of like going to see a horror movie.  You get to experience something together that might bring you closer.  Or it might tear you apart.  You never know."

For the second straight year, they've put together a Valentine's Day haunted house inside the Sanatorium.  Called "Forever and Always", the 15 scene adventure showcases the creepier side of love.

"The story line behind [one of our] scenes is there was a bride and her groom never showed," said Wright.  "So she waited forever and still waits for him to show up to get married.  And later on in the route, you find out what happened to the groom."

Wright says she and her team love haunted houses -- but hated having to wait from one October to the next October to put one together.  They felt the timing and allure of Valentine's Day were ideal for launching another one -- so they went with that.

"I would say our October haunted house is scarier," said Wright.  "But this one is more acting, entertaining, and it's also scary."

They've been working on this project for about two months and have spent long hours walking through it themselves, making sure each scene is optimized for scare factor.

"We have some good surprises," said Wright.  "It can be interactive -- unless you're running through it."

Ticket sales will help pay for building restoration costs.  And when you hear the St. Alban's team talk about it, it seems even more fitting that this came together Valentine's Day weekend.

"We all do this just to save the building, to restore it," said Wright.  "That way, we can provide historical tours along with paranormal tours.  It's all for love of the building."

"Forever and Always" runs Friday, February 15 and Saturday February 16 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm at the Sanatorium (6248 University Park Drive, Radford).  Tickets are $10 each.
