A former Virginia Tech football player will take over Martinsville High School's football team.

The Martinsville City School Board voted on Monday evening to hire Orion Martin as the next head coach of the Bulldogs.  Martin is currently an assistant coach for Franklin County.

Martin will also teach special education for Martinsville High School.  He's working toward completing a master's degree in special education from Liberty University.  He's working as a special education teacher at Franklin County High School.

"I'm excited and look forward to carrying on Martinsville's football tradition," Martin said in a news release.  "I think with my playing and coaching experience at Tech, it's a good fit. I'm a young, energetic coach, and I think I relate well to the students."

"I was very impressed with him," schools Superintendent Pam Heath said of Martin in the release.  Martin also pointed out that Orion came prepared with a detailed game plan, as well as a focus on schoolwork. "He really has the right mindset. He recognizes the importance of academics and having well-rounded student athletes. I think he'll set the bar high for our students."

"We're looking forward to what Orion has to offer the Martinsville program," said Martinsville Athletic Director Tommy Golding, in the release.  "We expect him to be very successful."

Martin played for the Hokies from 2004-2008, after graduating from G.W. Danville.  He earned second-team all-ACC honors as a defensive end his senior season, and was a co-team captain.

As Martinsville's head coach, Martin says he will strive for academic excellence and building character.

"There's a lot of potential for these young athletes," Martin said in the release.  "They just need someone to work hard with them and help them grow into young men... I've always wanted to come back to Martinsville and give back to the community.  It's a very special place for me and my family."
