Roanoke County Schools will start before Labor Day

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA -

Roanoke County school leaders have agreed to start school next year before Labor Day, despite final approval from state lawmakers.

The school board voted Tuesday night for classes to begin August 27th and end June 4th.

State law says school systems have to begin classes after Labor Day unless they get a waiver.

The Senate Budget hasn't passed yet, but the Roanoke County School Board is optimistic they will get a one year extention waiver. However, the extention means they will have to revisit this issue next year.

The waiver for Roanoke County also affects Roanoke City Schools.

The Roanoke City School Board made it clear that starting before Labor Day is much more beneficial for the students.

If that waiver isn't granted it could affect the RCPS Plus program. They would have to make the program 30 days instead of 25.
