Lexington City firefighters receive award for saving elderly man's life

Two Lexington firefighters receive a top honor for risking their own lives during the summer derecho.

Alex Foresman and Mike McGuire answered a call for a structure fire with an elderly man trapped upstairs.

When they got to the scene the two ran up the stairs and to the left bedroom where the smoke was coming from and pulled 94-year-old Bill Jenks out.

"I thought I was dying, because smoke is a terrible thing," Jenks said.

"Myself and my partner hoped out of that engine without a second thought in our mind and bolted for the door.  I'm pretty sure that's the fastest I've ever ran in my life that night, running across that yard," Foresman.

Foresman and McGuire were recently honored with a bronze medal of valor for saving Mr. Jenks life.

It's the first time the award was given in the Lexington City Fire Department's history.
