After seven seasons at the helm of the East Mont Mustangs football program, head coach Mark Poston has accepted the head coaching position at Nelson Co. High School. Poston was approved by the Nelson Co. school board at tonight's meeting.
The West Virginia native compiled a 42-35 record at the home of the Mustangs. During a two year stint in the 2009-2010 seasons East Mont racked up a 21-4 mark and finishes runner up in the state to Riverheads by a 63-49 margin. Behind star quarterback Shawn Christian, the VHSL Group A Player of the year, Eastern Montgomery is all over the state record book in numerous offensive categories. Christian alone threw for nearly 3800 yards and 44 scores his senior season, and ran for 14 more in what was a wide open "air-Mustang" attack. Brad Wooten was his favorite target and the receiver is a frequent name in the record books as well.
Poston has always crafted his teams to the type of players he finds on the roster, but expressed an interest in bringing his wide open spread attack to Nelson Co. He called his departure "bittersweet" because of all the fine people he has worked with--and for--and Eastern Montgomery, but is also very excited about the new opportunity. Nelson County finished at the bottom of the Dogwood District last season at 2-8. Poston's brother Chuck is the head football coach at Staunton River HS, and Poston says now the pressure is off a bit--because talk of brother vs brother match up had been brewing for a couple of seasons. Coach Poston thanked all the staff and administration at East Mont, but stressed that he wanted to thanks his kids for doing what he asked of them in order to get the program turned around.
