Galax Elementary hopes to win $10,000 for special needs program

A local school is in the running for an international award that could help give a special group of students the learning tools they need.

Galax Elementary School's Cooperative Center for Exceptional Children Program has entered to win $10,000.

It's part of a international contest called UCT Gives Back.

The school's assistant principal found out about the contest, lead the effort to make a video and entered to win.

"Budget cuts have really hurt and there isn't a lot of money coming into the program," explained Sonia Truitt, Galax Elementary School Assistant Principal.

"As Mrs. Truitt said, I tend to reuse, recycle, repurpose a lot of things to make the materials for the kids, because typically in a year I get $300 and $10,000 is definitely a step up from that," explained teacher, Linda Hunter.

Hunter says she wants to first buy a Smart Board if Galax Elementary wins.
