It's the kind of announcement that makes all competitors sad. And if you are a local football fan in the Roanoke Valley, there is an extra sense of disappointment for Michael Cole. The former Cave Spring star and Virginia Tech rover is being forced to retire from football. The Virginia Tech Athletics Department made the announcement this afternoon, due to Cole's neck injury and subsequent surgery. The injury was sustained in the Florida State game and diagnosed as a neck sprain. But after having what were classified as persistent symptoms surgery became necessary. After consulting with doctors it has been determined that the risk of further injury would be too high if he continued to play. The NCAA rules in this situation qualify Cole for a medical disqualification, which means he will remain on scholarship but not count against the 85 player limit.
Cole played in 10 games in 2012 as a redshirt freshman, making four starts as the nickel back. He was named Academic All-District and was honorable mention Freshman All-Amiercan by CFN.com after making 43 tackles and recording two picks and a fumble recovery. Cole is expected to make a full recovery.
It's been several months since filming on the movie "Wish You Well" wrapped up in Giles County. Now the film's producers say they're inching closer to a release date.
