Amherst County deputies warn of Social Security phone scam

AMHERST COUNTY, VA -

Amherst County Sheriff's Office news release

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office would like to warn the public of yet another phone scam running in this area.

We have received complaints of residents being called by someone stating they were with the social security administration.  This caller is seeking personal and banking information.  The reason they state they want the information is because they are changing the persons social security number.

Obviously you should never give any information out over the phone unless you initiate the transaction (i.e. purchase something), and the Social Security Administration isn't changing people's SSN numbers.

Roanoke City Councilman Sherman Lea says proposing a pay raise for council members and the mayor is an awkward situation for them. The proposal currently on the table would increase council's salary by 28 percent. However council members are the only ones that can propose a pay raise; a request that hasn't been made in 10 years says Lea.
