Roanoke Regional Airport excited about airline merge

Another long day of traveling is in the books for Heather Preu, who is one of the many who frequently fly U.S. Airways out of Roanoke. Hearing her most trusted airline is merging with American Airlines causes some mixed feelings.

"Occasionally I run into a situation where U.S. Airways doesn't fly there and I have to fly somewhere else. I hope it is a positive experience and more options for flights," says Preu.

Many are unsure about what the merge means for them here in Roanoke. Airport spokeswoman Sherry Wallace says this is great news for flights in and out of Roanoke.

"They have hubs in Miami, they also have a hub in Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, there are a lot of options out there that may lead to more service for us and connecting options," says Wallace.

According to Walllace, right now if you fly out of Roanoke you have access to 500 destinations with us airways. Once they merge with American Airlines that number will jump to 600 plus, which includes some international places like Mexico.

For some the concern is about their frequent flier miles. Just last year Preu was on 170 flights, racking up thousands of miles.

"I want to hit American Airlines web site and see what their frequent flyer program is like so I can compare," says Preu.

Wallace says all of your miles  will transfer over to American Airlines loyalty program within the next year, so you will be able to keep the same status you have with either program. You can also use those miles on flights to and from Roanoke once everything is combined.

For people like Preu, Wallace says nothing will be lost in the merge, you only have more to gain especially when it comes to flying out of the star city.
