Garst Mill trash an "eyesore"

Sunday afternoon:

About a dozen orange bags now line Garst Mill Road.

Roanoke County Sheriff Mike Winston sent an inmate work crew to clean up litter lining the road--- beer bottles, cups and bags.

Neighbors are thankful but encourage people to keep the road clean and stop littering.

Friday afternoon:

Beer bottles, empty cups and bags border Garst Mill Road.

"It blows my mind the amount of trash coming from Brambleton down into Grandin" said Caitlin Cheatham, a Roanoke County resident.

"Gradually over the last three or four years, the litter on the side of the road has gotten worse and worse" said Rick Cranwell, a Roanoke County resident.

The father and daughter say they're tired of litter lining the road.

"It's an eyesore. we're really proud of our neighborhood and the concept of just throwing trash out the window is something so foreign to me " said Cranwell. "Somebody was coming towards me and the window was down and just a bag of trash went out the window and into the ditch."

Garst Mill Road runs through Roanoke City and Roanoke County.  In the county, inmate crews are responsible for picking up trash. Roanoke city says when they get a report about a problem area they'll send a crew.

Because the inmate program is so popular, they usually book their schedule a year out unless someone reports a problem.

WSLS called about the problem and Roanoke County Sheriff Mike Winston says they're sending an inmate work crew to clean up and weather permitting the area should be clean by Monday.

Cranwell is thankful for the cleanup but says unless people stop littering the problem will just come back.

"I'd like to see people a little more respectful of our neighborhood and not throw trash out" said Cranwell.

Littering is illegal. It's a misdemeanor that can land you jail time, a fine or both.
