Christiansburg spay-neuter facing money shortage

It is an important time for spay-neuter clinics in both the Roanoke and New River Valleys.

"Cats are showing up pregnant, so we are trying to curb the population before it becomes an issue for the shelters as it does every spring," said Kelly Cass.

Cass, of Mountain View Humane, says while they do have money for a few special programs, their "Spay-it Forward" fund which they use to cut surgery costs nearly in half for low-income pet owners is about empty.

"Every other animal we have right now we're having to recoup the full price from our clients and not everyone can afford it," said Cass.

What it means for those looking to use Mountain View clinics in Roanoke and Christiansburg right now, male cats are $45, while female cats are a bit more at $58. Male dogs cost $68 to neuter, while female dogs are about $73 to spay.

According to Cass, the more dogs and cats that spend time on the operating tables means fewer animals spending time at the local shelter.

"It's everyone pulling together to help every animal in our community and every dollar raised is 100 percent going towards subsidizing animals."

It is all in an effort they hope will continue to help manage the pet population in our region.
