Roanoke City elementary school girls learn self confidence

ROANOKE, VA -

A group of Roanoke City elementary school girls is learning about self confidence while running.

It's called Girls on the Run, an international organization, where adults team up to coach girls eight to thirteen years old. They encourage healthy lifelong behavior in girls and self-confidence. Eight girls meet at Garden City Elementary School twice a week after school. At the end of the three month program, they'll run a 5k race May 25th.

"This is a life changing program but life changing programs can be fun. There's a lot of laughter and encouragement in our program" said Allison Law, the local Girls on the Run coach.

"We're learning how to be friends and when someone's feeling down we need to help them out a little bit" said Ayanna Pearcey, a nine-year old participating in the program.

The curriculum is designed to aid and support girls in their emotional, physical, social and intellectual development.

They are looking for volunteers. For more information visit http://girlsontherunroanokevalley.org/

Girls on the Run International (GOTRI) was founded in 1996 and is currently offered in over 150 North American cities.
