Douthat State Park prescribed burn planned for this week

BATH COUNTY -

Department of Conservation and Recreation news release

Douthat State Park is planning to conduct a prescribed burn during the week of Feb. 18 - 22.  The exact date will be determined by weather conditions.

The 135 acre burn unit is located in the western side of Douthat State Park. The prescribed burn will reduce the natural leaf and limb debris built up on the forest floor.  The prescribed burn will lower the danger from wildfire.

The burn will also improve growing conditions for tree species.  These tree species are dependent on fire, which helps encourage new growth to provide wildlife food and habitat.  The fire will also return valuable nutrients to the soil as well as assist in the control of non-native plant species.

This burn will be managed by certified Department of Conservation and Recreation Burn Crew members.  Additional support may be provided by the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The exact dates of the prescribed burn will depend on wind and weather conditions.  Law enforcement officers will be on-site to direct traffic through Douthat State Park if smoke conditions reduce visibility.  The park will use signs and the media to notify the public.

The burn could last up to two working days, but the hope is to implement most of the burn in one working day.
