Rocky Mount fixes sewage leak, caused by flooding

ROCKY MOUNT, VA -

The Town of Rocky Mount says its workers have fixed a sewage leak, caused by flash flooding earlier this month.

Public Works employees found the leak late this past Monday afternoon, February 11th, during a routine inspection.  A sewer main broke, and spilled raw sewage into Furnace Creek.

Assistant Town Manager Matt Hankins says the break was fixes on Wednesday.

The town reported the break and spill to the DEQ, and is monitoring the stream.

People who live downstream of Furnace Creek, between the Furnace Creek Swim Club and Veterans Park, are asked not to use water from it, until the next rainfall helps dilute the sewage even further.

Hankins says Public Works believes flash flooding eroded a concrete support holding a line, allowing it to sag and snap.
