VT students, Hokie Bird team up for epic "Harlem Shake" video

BLACKSBURG -

First there was planking.  Then there were the "Call Me Maybe" videos.  Now the "Harlem Shake" is taking the internet by storm.  Thousands upon thousands are getting in on this latest viral craze -- including hundreds of Virginia Tech students and the Hokie Bird.

If you're not familiar with these videos, they all start with a single person (typically wearing some kind of mask) randomly dancing to a song called the "Harlem Shake".  When the music reaches a certain point, a whole group of people (typically wearing unusual costumes / outfits) suddenly pops behind that person and starts dancing too.

On a brisk Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, penguins, bananas, students wearing shower curtains, and hundreds of others came out in droves for an impromptu dance party on the Drillfield.

"I thought a lot of people at Virginia Tech would enjoy coming out and doing this," said John Russell, a freshman at Virginia Tech.  "It's just fun to get a bunch of Hokies out here and do something all together."

Russell says like most people, he was confused but incredibly amused by all the Harlem Shake videos he'd seen online.  So he decided he wanted to make one.  But rather than keep it to just a group of him and his friends, he set his sights on something bigger.

"Now I can't even count all the Harlem Shake videos," said Russell.  "But it's definitely going to be one of the bigger school videos, at least thus far."

He started a facebook page trying to get as many students as possible to be part of his video and quickly got more than 1,400 RSVPs.

"The Harlem Shake is one of the funniest things I've seen in the past six months," said Morgan Carson, a freshman at Virginia Tech who danced in the video.  "So we had to be a part of it."

Russell even managed to recruit a big celebrity to star in the video.

"The Hokie Bird is actually going to come here and he's going to start the dance," said Russell.

They shot the entire video in about three or four takes.

"I was shocked," said Kaitlyn Cranham, a freshman at Virginia Tech who danced in the video.  "I didn't think that many people would come.  But that's so like the Hokie Nation."

"It was mayhem," said Carson.  "The things people brought out here were unreal."

Even though thousands of these videos are already on the internet, the students are confident their video will stand out.

"[Ours is] is the best," said Carson.  "No comparison."

"We're Virginia Tech," said Cranham.  "We're the best."

Russell posted the video to YouTube Saturday night.  As of Monday morning, it already had 58,500 hits.
