Blacksburg athlete shares Special Olympics experience

Ben Norris isn't putting his gold medal down much since his victory at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. "They put it around my neck," he described. "It was awesome."

Ben brought gold home to Blacksburg in his first of three events, the Alpine Intermediate Super G. His mother shared video she took of his run. He placed first with a winning time of 49 seconds. It was a run Ben said he felt would bring it home. "Yes, definitely." He also has ribbons for placing 7th in the Giant Slalom and Slalom.

It was an experience he sums up in one word. "It was awesome."

As awesome as winning gold is, Ben says his favorite part of the Olympic experience was the Opening Ceremonies where he and the 150 members of Team USA saw nearly 2,400 competitors from 112 countries and cultures come together. "It was opening ceremonies," he said. "There was lots of cultural stuff in the opening ceremonies."

The food though he says was just, "A little bit good." It took a little getting used to.
