RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former N.C. State men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe has been arrested and charged with failure to pay taxes.

Lowe, a point guard who led NCSU to the national title in 1983, was fired as head coach after the 2011 season. State hired Mark Gottfried to replace him.

Lowe, 53, is accused of failing to pay taxes by the North Carolina Department of Revenue, according to a spokesman at the Wake County Jail. He faces three misdemeanor charges of willful failure to pay taxes from 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Lowe entered the jail at 11:56 a.m. Monday and was released half an hour later.

He coached N.C. State from 2006 to 2011.

A first appearance is scheduled for March 19.
