A group of Roanoke City high schoolers are taking time away from their own studies to help other students make the grade.
Patrick Henry High School students volunteer each week to tutor other Roanoke City students including a group of kindergartners at Virginia Heights Elementary School.
The high schoolers are helping the kids speak, read, and write English.
"Most of them come from different countries, most of them didn't speak a word of English at the beginning of the year," said Andrea Gamber, ELL teacher at Virginia Heights.
"These children, I feel like sometimes they slip through the cracks in the school system, so they just need extra help learning English," said Sophie Delzell, PHHS junior.
Some of the high school students volunteer for the National Honor Society and others just volunteer on their own.
