Genetic kidney disease means tough decisions for a local woman and her two sisters

SALEM, VA -

This image shows just how bad Helen Garinian's kidney disease has gotten.

Dr. Syed Haider has treated her for years and says, "Medically speaking we don't have a whole lot else to do."

Garinian explains,"The kidney develops cysts, multiple cysts that rupture. Each time the cyst ruptures it causes damage to the functional part of the kidney."

Helen and two of her sisters have Polycystic Kidney Disease that they inherited from their father.

She says, "My father had it and his mother had it.  It goes way back and multiple people on my father's side of the family have it.  It is very difficult to find a donor."

Helen is now on a transplant waiting list because she is in stage four renal failure which means her two options are dialysis or a transplant.
