Ask Karen

ROANOKE -

Q: I saw the story regarding the inaccuracies in vitamin D, which means the others are probably the same. Will you be doing a follow-up that tells us where we can buy vitamins and get the advertised dose?

We did some checking with Tim Lucas, Downhome Pharmacy pharmacist:

*The FDA does not regulate supplements, so it can be tricky

*Unless we have been tested and found to have a vitamin D deficiency, we really don't need much each day if we get enough sunlight.

*It is possible to get too much vitamin D

He suggests staying away from some of the higher concentrations, unless they have been recommended by your doctor. He says most pharmacies will only stock products they believe are effective. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions on your next trip and he or she may be able to make a more specific recommendation depending on what you are looking for in a supplement or vitamin..
