Radford Ammunition plant welcomes Army Assistant Secretary

Posted: Updated:
RADFORD, VA -

Radford's Army Ammunition plant welcomed a special guest Thursday.

The Honorable Katherine Hammack, Assistant Secretary for the Army, toured the Montgomery County Facility.

Hammack talked about the advances in energy efficiency on base, but more importantly, the impact of sequestration on the plant.

If automatic spending cuts take place in congress, the assistant secretary says about 28,000 Army civilian jobs would be lost.

Remaining army civilians would be furloughed to the tune of a 20 percent pay cut, including 23 workers at the Radford plant.

"With this cut, it is essentially going to be a cut in everything we do, and so there's really nothing that is truly exempt," said Hammack.

According to Hammack, the Army is looking at trimming back things like lawn care service and trash pickup on base as well.

Statement from BAE Systems:

"We were pleased to support our customer today in hosting the Honorable Katherine Hammack, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. It was an exceptional opportunity to discuss the plant's mission and work, as well as the plans to modernize and optimize the facility for the long term.

We are aware of the Army's estimates of the effects that sequestration will have on the government's workforce and its production orders. We, too, are concerned about how sequestration will impact our business. It will certainly affect our company nationwide, but it is unclear how we will be affected here at Radford. At this time, we are not currently planning for any adjustments in staffing at the plant. We will continue to monitor the negotiations in Washington and manage and operate the Radford plant in a safe, secure and efficient manner to meet our customer orders."
